Match Secretaries Report - Paul Barnard

Following on from last years AGM 2007 here are the final results of last seasons competitions June 16 - 2006 to March 31 - 2007. The winners were awarded their trophies at the 2007 Christmas Match at Amesbury.

Inter Club Trophy: 1. Paul Barnard  2. Mick Keynes

Club Trophy: 1. S.Gumbleton    2. Paul Barnard

Senior Pairs: Paul Barnard and Malc Pepperell

Fred Pearson Cup: Ian Heydon
Stuart Casey Cup: Tom Baker

Ken Mar  Highest Weight: Andy Mitchell (81lb)
Christmas Match2006: 1. Ian Heydon 2. Brian Shutler

This season June 2007 started at Waldens Farm, 10 anglers fished with Paul Barnard easily winning with 102lb of carp.

It was back to Wellow lakes for the first time in several seasons, 16 anglers pegged on both Knightingale and Dandys lakes were unsure how the venues would fish as the Club have transferred a number of the smaller fish to Dandy’s in an attempt to improve the fishing. It was again a tale of two lakes as the Top weight on Knightingale was Jim Smith – 117lb and Dandy’s Haydon Mayers with 35lb. There is work still to be done by the Club to try and improve the fishing on the underused Dandy’s lake.

It was then onto the new commercial fishery a stones throw away from the Club’s Dandy’s lake at the Dandy’s Ford Fishery. Ian Goodfellow had an exceptional 168lb from the main lake with Mark Cannings 55lb from the canal lake. Boy do those fish pull a bit!

It was then onto Steeple Langford for the Fred Pearson and Under 18 Cups. The large lake was used for the 16 anglers that fished. Senior winner Rash Joomun was on the Tree swim on the causeway took the top weight on the day - 34lb of tench. Unfortunately there were no juniors entered for the under 18’s cup.

Onto the first Inter Club of the season against Kennet Osprays on Topmoor inner and outer, Mick Keynes of Salisbury won this 38 peg match with 58lb from the inner.

Eight Club anglers traveled up to Melksham hoping to fish the R.Avon against Avon Angling Club but the river was 6ft up after the Summer floods and the match was diverted to the Kennet & Avon canal. Top Club performer was Ray Ridgers who was second overall with 16lb. This turned out to be a real eye opener with speeding bicycles, prams, runners and walkers on the tow path followed up with a constant precession of canal boats. I think the day proved that anglers are very low in the pecking order when it comes to who has priority to carry on with their out door pursuits. Sadly the anglers pay for there access most of the above do not.

Back to Dandy’s Ford fishery with the anglers looking for a repeat performance. Strangely the fish had other ideas and very little was caught for the first 3 hours. Eventually the action did begin with Paul Barnard on the main lake – 148lb and Mark Cannings on the canal with 82lb.

Into August and the Club (18 anglers) had its annual visit to Test valley’s Kings & Willow lakes. This is usually a high weight event with Kings lake being one of the original carp bagging waters. Salisbury’s best result was a 54lb for Brian Shutler.

Next Inter Club was against Andover at Greenridge Farm canals top performer for the second week was again Brian Shutler with 69lb.

A further Club match beaconed at Wellow with 14 anglers restricted to Knightingale only. Top performer with a method feeder tempted 68lb was Club head bailiff Steve Trevett.

The Stuart Casey Cup followed at Petersfinger, this was an improved match due to the Club’s endeavor to improve the weed problems. Steve Trevett did the double following up the previous weeks win with a small fish net of 11lb.

Next stop the Kennet & Avon Canal at Lady’s Bridge and an Inter Club against Pewsey DAA. Although there were only 6 Club anglers present they faired well in the match with Ian Heydon winning easily with a waggler tempted 32lb of bream.

Further into September and the annual battle (Year 14) (45 anglers) between Test Valley and newly entered Eastleigh at Witherington Farms Snake lake and whilst friendly no quarter is given. Salisbury again failed to fair well at the draw bag at their local fishery and only Mark Cannigs made the frame with 66lb.

Into October and Witherington Farms Barnmoor beckoned for the senior pairs and Haydon Mayers and Greg Victor (Guest) won this low scoring event.

October also saw the first visit to our local rivers with the annual Teams of Four Open match, well done to the local Barney’s Blacks team (Paul Barnard, Malc Pepperell, Ray Rigers, Jim Smith) for keeping the prize money local with a good win

Onto a Club match at Greenridge Farm match canal 2 (9 anglers) were in attendance and it proved to be a difficult match due to rain but Mark Cannings did well to conjure up 91lb.

A Club match on the Constable Fishery R.Nadder followed (19) anglers fished and a number of decent weights were caught (7 into double figures). Great fishing by anybody’s standards – Marcus Crook - 34lb (all dace and Graham Pulling 28lb (chub) both anglers were pegged adjacent to each other in the Deanery meadow new field.

Onto the annual November Open with both rivers low and clear. They both performed well with Dave Tucker trouncing the Avon with 29lb of dace and chub and Malc Pepperell Winning the Nadder with a similar 30lb.

The last Inter Club (29 anglers) for 2007 was held on the Avon with visitors Pewsey DAA in attendance, the river level was reasonable but fairly clear. The result was a close one – Graham Pulling 1st 10lb 8oz, Lee Goodfellow 2nd 10lb 6oz and Ian Heydon 3rd 10lb (all Salisbury).

I was saddened to here that just after the Stuart Casey Cup Match in September, record cup winner and Club stalwart Tom Baker had been taken seriously ill. Tom had not been well enough to attend any Club events since that date so I was glad to here he wanted to attend the annual Christmas match.

Here is how the last Club match of 2007 at South Mill and West Amesbury wetted the appetites of the Club Members. The result was that the river appeared in good trim but very clear and very few fish could be seen skirting across the gravel runs. Fortunately this had no effect on the results. Total weight 612lbs caught by 34 anglers – average weight 18lb per man around 212lb up from last year’s event. The winner was one of the Club’s Vice President’s and veteran match angler Gordon Pidgeon with 37lb. Gordon went home with a smile on his face cradling a wad of cash in one hand and a large Christmas Hamper in the other. Tom Baker next peg down from Gordon had 17lb and had an enjoyable day. Once again A Big Thank you to the Committee from all the attending match anglers for allowing us to use this prestigious venue for this annual event.

The club are currently looking for full and part time bailiffs on a number of our coarse fisheries. If you would like to be considered, please contact Dave Winter in the first instance at dave.winter@salisburydistrictac.co.uk with a brief resume, the water (s) you could possibly police and the hours available. And he will contact you and explain the current situation.
