Fred Pearson Cup 11th July
12 Club anglers attended the match at Steeple Langford Lakes and
as this is the only visit to the lakes this season it was disappointing
to find a number of the Club’s specimen anglers still bivied
up and asleep when the organisers arrived at the lakes to peg the
match. Normally this is not an issue because in most cases the
organisers are flexible as are the Carper’s but on this occasion
it proved not to be the case. Onto the match fished in bright,
breezy warm conditions:
- Ian Heydon – 20lb 12oz (5 Bream and 1 Tench on the ground
bait feeder - maggot)
- Steve Trevett – 20lb 2oz ( Steve had a busy day with
15lb of Rudd on a whip and 5lb of eels on the pole – maggot
and worm)
- Dave Docherty – 14lb 4oz ( a mixed bag of fish caught
on waggler float - maggot)
Club Match 18th July
16 Anglers attended this event at Petersfinger and both lakes
were utilised. As is usual for a match at Petersfinger Mike Britten
ensured everything was in order and checked with the organisers
offering his advice on what swims would be worth utilising. It
is worth mentioning that this Club fishery is extremely well maintained
and it is thanks to Mike and his helpers that make it so. Onto
the match again fished on a bright sunny day:
- Malc Pepperell – (18lb 4oz – 3 Tench, 2 Bream and
some bits – soft pellet - fishing on the top point of the
1st Lake)
- Lee Goodfellow- (16lb 4oz – 3 Tench and 2 Bream – soft
pellet - from the causeway into the 2nd lake)
- Frank Gumbleton – (14lb 8oz – 3 tench, 1 Bream
(5lb 8oz) and a Chub – worm - on the outlet peg of the
2nd lake)

Again because of the dreadful weather conditions this match was
changed to a Club match and the venue of choice for safety reasons
was the centre of the town on the river Avon. This enabled us to
park within the vicinity of our pegs with ease of access and a
quick getaway if the weather conditions deteriorated. The brave
souls (eleven mad men) that turned up for this one fully expected
numerous blanks but sometimes when the weather is consistent (in
this case freezing) bites can be had:
1. Shaune Gumbleton (old swimming baths – 7lb
12oz – 4 chub)
2. Paul Colebeck (Boathouse
bridge – 5lb 12oz)
3. Paul Barnard (Waitrose – 5lb
4oz)
3 January 2010
A Club match was well attended at Lords Walk Amesbury once again
in freezing conditions and for the first time we included the side
stream off the main river which proved to be successful for the
eventual winner. I live in Amesbury but due to work and fishing
commitments I do not get the chance to visit this section of river
very often but to say I was surprised and very disappointed to
see the mess that the Wessex Chalk Stream Trust has done to the
river in the name of habitat restoration.
Soap box over onto the results:
1. Paul Clancy (Sidestream – 9lb
9oz – grayling)
2. Shaune Gumbleton (main river – 5lb
4oz)
= Paul Barnard (main
river – 5lb 4oz)

The annual Christmas Open was held on the Constable fishery and
the attendance was slightly less than usual most probably due to
the proximity to Boxing Day and the unfavourable weather conditions.
Still 20 anglers braved the elements and they were spread out around
the fishery to try and give them a chance of a decent days fishing.
Sadly due to the said weather conditions and all local lakes iced
over it was not pleasant to witness cormorants flying and circling
in and around the area of the fishery. Anyway moving on to the
results:
1. Mick Haskell (Ringwood) (Deanery
meadow – 20lb 5oz – 8 good chub)
2. Paul Barnard (Below
Harnham Mill – 20lb 2oz)
3. Jim Smith (Below
Harnham Mill – 17lb 12oz)
4. Malc Stubbs (Harnham
Mill Pool – 13lb 15oz)
20 December 2009
The Clubs annual Christmas Match took place on the Club’s
Premium water on the river Avon at South Mill and West Amesbury.
The conditions leading up to the competition were far from ideal
for a normal winter venue 3ºC in the day and -2ºC at
night. Luckily Amesbury is not your normal venue with the predominate
species being Trout (obviously) but they do not count of course
and Grayling, plus occasionally Dace will play there part and this
year was no exception.
This is a busy week for me leading up to this event with the requirement
to purchase the contents that go into the six Hampers that constitute
the main prizes and the traditional bottle of Christmas cheer for
each of the participants. Plus I would like to thank Ian Heydon
who took time out on the Saturday before the match to peg out the
length in preparation the following day’s event. Onto the
results and although there were areas that did not perform as well
as usual numbers of good quality bags were caught:
1. Andy Mitchell (above
Hams Hatches – 33lb 12oz – Large ChristmasHamper – Tom
Lowe Trophy + prize money)
2. Ian Heydon (West
Amesbury above the sleeper bridge – 27lb 12oz)
3. Malc Pepperell (above
Hams Hatches – 24lb 4oz)
4. Simon Charles Ward (above Hams
Hatches – 21lb 12oz – mainly dace)
Update 12th November 2009
Sunday 8/11/09 was a new Club event held on the Constable Fishery.
The match was in honour of one of the great match stalwarts of
the Club Tom Baker and it was fitting that a good turnout of 20
anglers lined the banks on one of Tom’s favourite venues
including Tom’s son Richard. The preceding week had seen
the heaviest rain we had had in the area for many weeks and it
was a surprise to see the river lower than it was a fortnight ago
and still clear. This was encouraging because the fish in the Club
River’s live in this clarity for 9 months of the year so
it was not surprising that the results were again very good.

Updated 2nd November 2009
The Club held its annual Team of Fours event on the Rivers Avon
and Nadder (26/10/09) and with only 5 teams entered the pegging
for the event enabled me to select the better areas. This proved
not as easy as hoped due to the low levels and extensive weed growth
but a plan was hatched together and the decision was made to place
15 anglers on the Constable fishery and 5 on the Avon through the
horse’s field where during a previous event a good number
of fish were caught.
The day was bright, sunny and warm and this weather whilst pleasant
to fish in brings the worst out of fishing the rivers in Salisbury – the
dreaded PUBLIC – they were everywhere – dogs,
prams, bikes, foreigners, children, adults (big children) and all.
Anyway onto the days fishing and the results were very good with
large numbers of small fish caught from many of the areas primarily
dace:
Section Winners
Malcom Stubbs Below
Harnham Mill 24lb 12oz (7 Chub and
a big Perch)
Paul Barnard Elizabeth
Gardens 23lb 14oz (Dace)
Shaun Gumbleton Avon 23lb
12oz (Dace and Grayling)
Malcom Pepperell Elizabeth
Gardens 18lb 5oz
(Dace)
Team Result
1. Barney’s Blacks 18

2. Stubbies Commandos 13

The first Club match of the year on the river Avon was held on
11th Oct. Pegging the match at 8am in the morning did not really
inspire any anticipation as the condition of the river really looked
depressing with very low levels and excessive weed growth. Adding
to this there were trees in and across the river, dogs mess and
in the top field where the Club now own the land and have fenced
this off, elephant grass to contend with!!
Onto the match – 17 anglers turned up and we placed 5 at the top
end starting just of the Stratford shallows, 6 through the horse’s
field and a further 7 below ending up just above the hatches of
Summerlock stream. With the weather overcast and warm there should
be a few fish caught and surprisingly there was - predominately
dace and grayling:
1. Brian Shutler 22lb 12oz Horses field
2. Paul Clancy 17lb 10oz Top field shallows
3. Marcus Crook 14lb 2oz Horse’s field
4. Jimmy Smith 12lb 2oz Horses field (included 3 chub)
5. Steve Brown 10lb Top field
6. Paul Colebeck 8lb 8oz Horses field

Petersfinger – Stuart Casey Cup Sept 6th
13 Members fished the first lake. Generally the fishing was far
from good with only 3 bigger fish caught 2 tench and a carp. Those
who were fortunate enough to have small fish in their swims had
plenty of bites.
- Steve Trevett 16lb
12oz – lots
of small roach and rudd on the pole.
- Paul Hough 11lb
12oz – 5oz’s
of small fish and one 11lb 7oz carp caught in the last minute
of the match on the pole.
- Shaun Gumbleton 8lb -
small fish caught on rod and line
